Abu Dhabi Testing Drones to Locate Missing Persons

The Abu Dhabi Police have tested a new technology that involves the use of drones to locate missing persons. Developed by the UAE University this technology, could be used for helping people in emergencies and to find residents if they get lost in remote areas.

A search and rescue team at the police’s central operations unit tested this technology as a part of its measures towards improving emergency services. According to a Press statement issued by the police on Monday, the technology is in line with the UAE government’s vision to upgrade police services.

The test flight of the drone was conducted based on the international quick response standards to emergencies. Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim Al Ameri, head of the emergency and public safety department, stressed the importance of using drones in rescue operations. This technology, he said, reduces human errors in locating missing persons. He also mentioned that the police’s relationship with universities and research centers was commendable.

Dr Fekry Kherbash, dean, Information Technology College at the UAE University, added that this new technology aims to boost the reduction in the police’s response time to emergencies or crises.
