Drones represent a new potential market and as such have attracted a lot of attention lately. However, the use of drones (or UAVs) in situations which no one predicted years ago makes them even more interesting as a concept and as a technology that can be more beneficial than the existing ones.
One such technology and concept is the one talking about low-altitude drones that would include Internet of Things (IoT) features and as such play an important role in the Internet of Things (IoT) vision.
In the near future, drones employing IoT features are expected to be rapidly used and deployed in many different sectors of our daily life performing and wide-ranging activities. A paper submitted by Lanka Sunitha and Dr. C. Ramesh Kumar at the Malla Reddy Engineering College & Management Sciences in Kistapur specifically addresses all the benefits and challenges of IoT-connected drones and their potential use worldwide.
For the ones that don’t know, the Internet of Things (IoT) is basically a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical as well as digital machines or gadgets that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and are able to transfer data over a network without requiring any human-to-human interaction. In other words, the IoT devices communicate with each other and are ‘smart’ enough to make most of their features.
Due to their ubiquitous usability, drones are the perfect (potential) ambassadors in the Internet of Things (IoT) vision and may be the key enablers of this vision. However, deploying UAVs in this manner can only be done if the relevant challenging issues are properly addressed.
These basically include technical issues, such as physical collision but also regulation issues as this technology could easily be associated with privacy-related problems or use for illegal operations such as drug smuggling. This is why providing specific communication to UAVs is an issue by itself – and a crucial step towards the deployment of this technology.
Still, probably the biggest benefit of drones in this particular segment is the fact that they don’t pollute the air and that they don’t require manpower. In times when drones are becoming an integral part of the IoT infrastructure, these benefits reduce the cost and saves time in many systems and operations.
Drones can also be used as rescue providers, flying above specific regions and taking photos and videos of the incidents while processing the photos to a central surveillance order – again through the perks of Internet of Things (IoT) and its massive potential.
From natural disasters to incidents, the use of UAvs in disaster management operations is a vital part of this technology and a role that can reduce the number of victims and add up to the economic consequences.
