New Model for Improving Transmissions in Multi-UAVs Enabled WSNs

Remote Controlled (RC) planes and helicopters have been there for quite a lot of time. You hold a small transmitter or remote control in your hand that controls the aircraft’s altitude and maneuvering, allowing to perform whatever stunts you want to perform. But how many times have you seen it happen or heard of it happen?

A remote controlled aircraft, controlled by a hand held remote or transmitter, was used for 24/7 surveillance, or was used for a military operation, or for spraying pesticides on a field of crops; very, VERY few times. The reason? That’s pretty obvious really. Your remote control or transmitter has a very limited range, you are constantly looking at the aircraft you are flying and it cannot go too far away or maneuver itself, you are stuck with the aircraft that you fly.

The massive ground-breaking improvement on RC aircrafts were Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones, that were equipped with GPS (Global Positioning System) modules, internet, long range receivers and transmitters as well as sensors that helped them with the quality of their flight, allowing them to fulfill their mission with certainty and keeping them safe from damage. Initially finding their usage in military offense operations, UAVs quickly found their way into multiple departments and sectors, expanding their field of application day by day at an accelerating rate. The reason? UAVs do not need you to fly them, they help you complete a mission, performing the job of a pilot by themselves. That is to say, UAVs could fly autonomously on their own and communicate with servers, satellites and understand their environment by themselves; which means that their communication, done by transmitting signals, is extremely important. Transmission of signals by UAVs, the primary reason for their success, is a hot topic of research and innovation all over the world and is expected to only get better and better with the passage of time.

UAV application scenarios.

The research paper titled ‘An Efficient Mobility Model For Improving Transmissions In Multi-UAVs Enabled WSNS‘ by Sayeed Mohd, Abuzar Rajesh and Kumar Rajesh from the Computer Science and Engineering department of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) in India effectively explores transmission systems used in UAVs and proposes an efficient, feasible solution to improve the transmission of signals.

The research expands on the density of the nodes of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). Like other design optimization problems, the research approaches the best possible solution by using random variables and creating a finite number of configurations within a range of those variables, prioritizing some variable values over other, the best configuration or the best combination of the variables is considered as the best possible solution. Their proposed approach demonstrates significant gains in coverage, throughput, jitter, and data transfer ratios. The data loss is decreased exponentially and massive gains are observed for data transfer.
