AirSelfie, the selfie-clicking compact flying drone is back and this time, in an HD avatar. Unveiled at the CES 2018, the second generation of the camera drone, AirSelfie2, comes with an improved camera, increased memory capacity and enhanced battery life.
Developed by London-based AirSelfie Holdings Ltd., the first AirSelfie was launched towards the end of 2016. The pocket sized (with dimensions of 3.72 x 2.71 x 0.45 inches) flying camera came with a 5MP video camera and could be controlled by a smartphone app. The improved version sports a 12MP camera for full HD photo and video.
The AirSelfie is built of lightweight aeronautical grade aluminium case, keeping its weight to a minimum while making it enough sturdy to protect it from regular wear and tear. The device utilises turbo fan propellers for its movement and can travel more than 65 feet from its base. Integrated vibration-absorber and in-flight stability systems ensure image stability.
The device comes equipped with a rechargeable battery, while there is also option of an external power bank. The device can be instantly charged through a cell phone case or through an USB cable. The power bank can be used to charge the device up to 20 times, thereby increasing the total device usage time to over an hour on the field. The AirSelfie can connect wirelessly to most iOS/Android devices and can generate its own 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.
The AirSelfie2 will be available in 4 colours: black, silver, gold and rose gold, and is expected to be priced at $300 (approx. A$380).
What has improved
AirSelfie2 improves on quite a few aspects from its first generation brethren:
- Camera: A full HD experience, with the 12MP camera offering a wide 85° field of view, meaning no additional lenses are needed
- Battery: Battery life has doubled, enabling total flying time of 4 minutes and 30 seconds
- Memory: 16GB memory, compared to 4GB in the first generation
- Smartphone App: upgraded app for iOS and Android
- Lightweight: Weighs 57 grams only, slightly less than the 61 grams of AirSelfie1
Given the ever increasing popularity of ‘selfies’ and online social networking these days, devices such as the AirSelfie are bound to find a loyal following, especially with the recent advances in audio/video capabilities. As Stefano Cabella, the CEO of AirSelfie so aptly puts, “The AirSelfie2 is truly revolutionary when it comes to flying cameras. When you’re looking to capture life’s important moments, dramatic scenery or large group shots, you want a combination of best-in-class technology and ease of use. The AirSelfie2 delivers precisely that.”
