Drones are increasingly being used in public safety, with at least 910 local and state police, sheriff, fire, and emergency services agencies now using drones in the US alone.

This is an increase of 82% in the last 12 months according to a report by the Center for the Study of the Drone at Bard College.

Capitalising on this increasing drone market, DJI and Axon have now announced an exclusive partnership through which DJI will be able to sell directly to public safety departments and law enforcement agencies.

Sales of the drones will be conducted via Axon’s unmanned aircraft program Axon Air. A leader in connected law enforcement technologies, Axon announced the partnership at the third annual Axon Accelerate conference which was attended by more than 1,500 police, security, legal and technology professionals from around the globe.

The partnership will link DJI drone technology with Axon’s extensive data network and digital evidence management service Evidence.com, which is already used by 200,000 public safety professionals.

Law enforcement and public safety departments and organisations use drones for a wide variety of purposes including search and rescue, reconstruction of traffic collisions, improving officer and public safety and as part of tactical strategies.

There have also been many incidents of drones of savings lives, with at least 130 successful missions documented to date, said Axon in a press release.

By linking Axon’s data and evidence services with DJI drones, agencies will be able to rely on the same rigorous chain-of-custody controls and security protocols provided by Evidence.com to protect the safety of the drone videos they collect.

Axon’s EVP of Worldwide Products, Todd Basche said that the partnership will improve evidence collection and management methods.

“As the requirements and demands of unmanned aircraft programs grow, Axon is partnering with agencies to build out solutions that meet the complexities and requirements of public safety,” he said.

“Together, we will focus on creating situational awareness, advanced evidence collection and program management tools that will allow agencies to manage their drone program alongside their body camera and in-car video systems.”

DJI, who have already partnered with the European Emergency Number Association (EENA) to develop a drone emergency framework, are continuing their work in the field of public safety through the partnership with Axon.

“DJI’s partnership with Axon allows law enforcement agencies to add drone capabilities and data services through the same trusted provider they rely on for the tools, data and support they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said Michael Perry, Managing Director of North America at DJI.

“Law enforcement agencies are rapidly adopting drones for their work, and often need guidance on how to establish a drone program and integrate it into their departments. DJI’s Axon Air partnership will strengthen and enhance law enforcement’s ability to protect public safety, respond to emergencies and save lives.”

Axon will also partner with public safety agencies to identify particular drone-related solutions that will serve the public safety and law enforcement communities.

DJI drones currently available for sale through the Axon Air program include: Phantom 4 Pro, Inspire 1, and Matrice 210. Interested agencies can reach out to Axon Air to learn more about how they can adopt drone technology today.
