It has been one of the most anticipated launches in Chinese drone maker DJI’s history, and now the much awaited successor to DJI’s popular Mavic Pro is now available.

At 10am in Brooklyn, New York, DJI introduced two new members of the Mavic family: the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom, both now available to buy on the DJI website.

Despite numerous leaks prior to the reveal of DJI’s latest Mavic drones, there was still a lot for DJI to cover at the launch.

“When the Mavic Pro was launched two years ago, it redefined the way people looked at a drone and expanded possibilities for creators around the world,” said Roger Luo, President at DJI.

“Today, we enter a new era of aerial photography with the introduction of DJI’s new flagship product, the Mavic 2 series. The Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom will enable photographers and videographers to take their inspirations to the air quickly and elevate their creative ideas to new heights.”

By introducing two models, DJI are offering different ways of capturing the world. Which you choose is up to you, whether you are looking for better than ever clarity and colour with the Mavic 2 Pro or the chance to get up close and personal to your subjects with the Mavic 2 Zoom – without disturbing them.

Naturally both models are foldable just like the original Mavic Pro, with the design staying true to the Mavic family and allowing for easy travel.

As for details on features, the much-lauded integration of a Hasselblad-designed camera with 1-inch sensor was confirmed on the Mavic 2 Pro, as was the 2x optical zoom (24-48mm, 4x total zoom) with a 1/2.3 inch sensor for the Mavic 2 Zoom.

We also now know that the Pro version can capture 20Mp photos, with 12Mp possible for the Zoom version.

Talk of the ability to shoot 4K, 10-bit HDR video for both models was also confirmed, with the Mavic 2 Pro’s Dlog-M video capturing 4x the number of colours as the previous 8-bit video possible with the Mavic Pro.

But what we are really excited about the confirmation of hyperlapse with Free, Circle, CourseLock, and Waypoint modes for both models, and a quick shot dolly zoom emulator for the Zoom version.

The Mavic 2 series also come with an enhanced HDR algorithm for deeper dynamic range, as well as ‘HyperLight’, allowing for photography in low-light environments with reduced noise reduction.

This means not only will those who make the decision to buy their own Mavic 2 drone be able to capture detail and colour as never before with a DJI Mavic drone, they’ll also be able to create some pretty amazing effects.

In addition to these fantastic specs, both models come with 8Gb storage as standard, and boast a top speed of 70km/hr, a max flight time of 31 minutes, as well as super quiet flight.

Omnidirectional obstacle avoidance has also been confirmed, with each model kitted out with 10 sensors (yes, 10!) and APAS (Advanced Pilot Assist), meaning the chance of crashing your new Mavic drone is significantly reduced.

OcuSync 2.0 also comes as standard for both models, beaming live 1080p video at 40Mbps to your device as much as 8km away.

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro is now retailing for $US1,449 and the Mavic 2 Zoom for $US1,249, with the drone maker promising the drones will ship within one day of purchase.
